I was about to say snooker was my first sporting love, but then I remembered that actually I was really into tennis first, in the era of Andre Agassi, Steffi Graf, Martina Navratilova and my fave, Goran Ivanisevic. I suppose that snooker was the first sport I got into by myself, because my mum had always watched tennis - after years of resistance because my dad hated all sport and I copied everything my dad did and thought, haha, I finally started watching in the early 90s and lasted till about 2001, just before the dawn of the Federer/Nadal era I guess.
Snooker stuck with me though - partly because by that time I was living in Sheffield, and it’s a very good place to be a snooker fan, especially around late April, when the world championships happen at the Crucible theatre here.
Then cricket came along around 2005 - I remember seeing us win the Ashes that year, except I was thrown out of the room for the very end because I was a jinx, lol. I dipped in and out till about 2009 when I started following England more closely. They might not be doing so well in this Ashes series, but it’s easier for me to handle because I’ve seen them win several Ashes series and been the best side in the world, so I guess I can accept that nothing lasts forever, haha. (I’m an optimist by nature XD)
I know I started to have a keener awareness of F1 around that time too thanks to my friend, but I didn’t start watching it properly/continuously till 2011, which I do regret in a way, but I’m also glad I didn’t watch in 2008 because I might never have watched again after the end of that season D;
So I always think I was never into sport, but I guess I was, even if I always avoided the ubiquitous football. I just can’t get into it - though I’ve learnt to never say never…
